lderberry or elder is a genus of around thirty species of shrubs in the moschatel family also known as Adoxaceae. Its Latin name is Sambucus. This plant is found in the temperate to subtropical regions of the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere. The leaves resemble feathers with five to nine leaflets. Each leaf is five to thirty centimeter long, and the leaflets have serrated margins. Large clusters of small white flowers bloom in late spring and these are followed by clusters of small black, blueblack, or red berries. Elderberry juice was used against a flu epidemic in Panama in 1995. Elderberries have been used as a traditional medicine for centuries in North America, Europe, Western Asia, and North Africa. Today the many health benefits effectsof elderberries are being researched and rediscovered.
